Problem when first loading gameEdit

I know the page mentions that this function returns 0 until the player selects another spell after removing the active spell, but it also seems to be unable to return the active spell if it isn't changed after loading a game. For example, I saved with a spell called Swap selected. When I next loaded the game, this function didn't seem to be able to detect that a spell was selected until I actively selected another spell.
