Navigation Suggestion
Heads up for new users
I had originally posted this in the Community Portal, but Qazaaq suggested I mention it here.  It would be a bit easier to navigate the wiki if you added a "Categories" link to the main ToC on the Main Page.<br />
RedFault 15:52, 8 January 2008 (EST)

:Hmm... Yeah, I will look into that. I'm not sure how useful that will be (there are a lot of categories that aren't too useful), but if it looks good I'll add it.
I posted this suggestion sometime ago. Is it feasible to implement ?<br>

Hi, DW. The ar_constuct line from the OBSE doc is "(array_var) ar_Construct arrayType:string". From the little i could figure out about the CSbot, it seems that it got confused with the return value being a single word. The ar_construct page has 'returnVal = array_var' but no 'returnType', resulting in a command line of '(void) ar_Construct arrayType:string'. Somewhere along the line it lost the original info and replaced it with 'void'. I could add a 'returnType' to the raw text, but decided to leave it alone, so you could check. == IRC Client for the Wiki! ==
Questions and Answers
::odd.bod Thank you very much DragoonWraith for your reply on the Main Page's talk page. I've changed my mind. My channel is not very good and has only been going for two weeks, but someone else has asked me to put their channel forward. It is called #esmod. You need to be able to connect to the server then the client. The server is irc.chatspike.net. The admin of it is called Dcoy. He seemed rather exited about this when I told him yesterday so I hope you consider it. This would be a great oppertunity for the site. A person good at linking two different things would have to do it though because I don't know how to. If you would like, I could create a link in the tools section so that people can get the program mIRC so that they would be able to connect to the channel. I hope you consider it. Please reply via my talk page.
just noticed this :

:::odd.bod Erm, well I don't know where it would go. People keep saying the tools section but I don't think so. The Client is a chatroom for anyone who does not know. Erm... I think links. I don't know if that will work, but it's worth a try!
Removed all Questions and Answered Questions to be deleted from those categories, and added "Discussion" to those that will remain

::::mIRC is the most powerful IRC thing people would want to get. I'm just wondering, is it you that sorts out the links there? If not, then I'd be happy to create the Category in there and then create the link to mIRC's page (where you will download it.) If neccasary, I will write up some instructions as to how to connect to the server and join the channel, although mIRC has already done this.odd.bod

Bot approval and request a bot flag
A while ago I’ve read a topic on the wiki about welcoming new users. At this moment there is only one bot active on this Wiki. welcoming new users required a bot and I couldn’t ask your bot to do this because you were not certain the bot was allowed to be "always on" like that and you are always busy taking care of other things so I decided to create my own. I searched more information about bots and eventualy I managed to set up my own bot.

Guidobot's articles
DXbot (The account has been created but it's empty) is a PyWikipedia-based robot, just like your bot and when approved it will run the welcome.py to welcome all new users (with less than one edit)(but I think I need to change it first so it fits this Wiki).

From this discussion, I don't think Guidobot wants his articles to be rewritten. Maybe it would be best to move the articles to his user space and start afresh.--Haama 10:37, 20 January 2008 (EST)
First of all my bot needs to be approved before I use it and since you’re the only one who has a bot I think it’s best if I ask you. I have another request if it has been approved: I don’t want it to clutter recent changes so it needs to be flagged as a bot before making any edits on the CSWiki.

:I'm confused - he seems happy to have his article worked on in that link. I do seem to remember Guido being somewhat possessive of those articles, perhaps we should try to contact him.
If it gets approved and if it gets flagged as a bot, the only problem left for me to solve is to create a welcome template but that shouldn’t be too much of a problem. (I actually thought it would be much harder to install and run a bot. I only had a few problems with the wiki-family thing.)

::Maybe it was something I got from other conversations - it seemed to me more like he was happy to take them into consideration, rather than let/have me make the edits. Well, no good way to go about this, so I'll PM him on the BF (he was last on in early January, so he'll probably respond sooner than later).--Haama 20:09, 20 January 2008 (EST)
Quick Question
Questions on the Wiki
I hate to ask questions, but I thought this would be the fastest way to find out. I type the name of my created mod into my computer search, and it comes up empty. Where can I find it? I need to attach it to an email. A thousand thanks, --Arch-Mage Matt 13:23, 11 September 2010 (EDT)

I see. I saw some other questions posted on the Wiki and also the Questions and Answers categories, so I figured it would be ok. Regarding the image for deletion, I wasn't "hosting" the image here, I just thought it would add some color to my profile. I have my own website if I wanted to host images (and I do).

Thanks anyway! odd.bod
Don't know why Inv/Mag Filter codes were here. Changed to MenuTypes which is required here.
Also added an example to clarify the function goes for traits (i.e. <visible />, not children (i.e. a rect-element). Maybe not the best example (I think one checking for DarN would be better), but don't have the time to browse menu-files I don't use just for that.

Hi, there, DW. For the past couple of weeks the Recent Changes page has been inaccessible most of the time (Error HTTP 500 = "The website is under maintenance" / "The website has a programming error"). Same for the search results page and a few others. I wonder if this is a general problem or it is just a matter of tweaking some local settings on my side. == Machinima ==
About the search function
It is better today.

not sure if theres a mail section on this site. but yeah, i have been tooling around with the CS. i'm getting the basics, and i do mean BASICS.  i have read a lot of tutorials, i wouldn't mind eventually making a quest.  but i really need to focus on what you said.  Scripting and event type codes.  i found morrowind much easier to mod, especially the interior/exterior differentiation.  the ability to distinguish what is where without necessarily having to refer to grid numbers. i am plugging away several hours a day at learning this newer CS. but if anyone want to help with a machinima project, i've got a great writer, and i can trade work for audio-post production and even custom sound tracks to any mods anyone creates. --Marcus.sawyer 09:05, 14 May 2008 (EDT)
Yesterday I could not find StopQuest. Today it is in the search results, but the resulting list brings articles that shouldn’t be there as they don't have the searched word.

Confusion on Update tag
And, although the link to StopQuest is in the results, there is the "Create the page "STOPQUEST" on this wiki! " at the top

You placed the tag in the Variables talk page?--Haama 16:46, 28 May 2008 (EDT)
Another thing I've just noticed is that the "List of Functions" (my personal main page) is incomplete. It stops in the middle of the "S" section. Some limit exceeded, perhaps?

:Oh, oops. That was when I was messing with the categories on the Variables page. I'll fix that.
And, btw, is there a automated way of applying templates (like a fill-the-blanks form) or do I type the whole thing? (which is no big deal, anyway) QQuix 05:10, 4 December 2011 (EST)

Indenting codeboxes
You can indent codeboxes with the HTML tags dl and dd. One dl tag at the start, then one dd tag for every indent (don't close them), and one /dl at the end to close the indented area. I'll make an example of the code on Talk:GetRace.

Going Through the Beginner's Guides
Could you please give me the source code from the file "esstyle.php" in the "skins" folder of this wiki? DragoonWraith? I would like to use it in my own Elder Scrolls wiki, V.F.D. Wiki. Dagoth Ur, Mad God 05:19, 19 September 2008 (EDT)
So I've finally been going through the newbie guides like I said I would weeks ago and I've been trying to keep in mind what you said about looking for things more experienced modders would likely miss. I am finding a few inconsistencies that have made some of the guides confusing from a noob perspective, but I'm not sure what to do about them for several reasons:<br/>
#I realize I'm nit picky about instructions and could be making a big deal out of things that aren't really a problem. <br/>
#These articles are featured, so I figure they've been combed through and edited by hundreds of people over the years and any problem I'm having with them is probably my fault. <br/>
#The inconsistencies have to do with things I don't know anything about, so I couldn't change them anyway.<br/>
Would you like me to make a note of articles that trip me up like this so you can consider them later, or are they not worth worrying about?<br/>

:I seem to have lost the original style scripting for the wiki. Do you know any way that I can get it back? Right now, the main part of the page that all of the articles show up in is pushed to the left and is partially hidden under the Navigation boxes. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

House Making Tutorials
There seems to be numerous house-making tutorials, all of which seem to be incomplete. The list of tutorials I've found are:

How to make a house

Creating a House

Both of these were added a long time ago, and show no signs of being added to - I'd suggest scrapping both of them (They have such a high cross-over anyhow that one should go in any case) and then getting someone else to create a completely new, more intuitive tutorial with much more depth, which I'd be up for to fill some time! ;)

Since creating a house is one of the first things that people want to do, I guess making it as easy to follow as possible would make sense (and neither of those I've found do at all).

Having said this, there might be a badly named tutorial by someone on the topic. I've been looking, but you seem to be guru on all things wiki! I'll look like a dick if there is now. :(

Sorry for the lengthy message. And the numerous other ones before it! I'm still getting to grips.

--Gregbert 13:20, 28 April 2009 (EDT).

:Our default "first thing people should do" tutorial is A Beginner's Guide, which is pretty solid. Still, a basic house-making tutorial is something we should have. If you are interested, definitely go for it. Feel free to use one of the existing article titles, and add afd on the second so it'll be deleted. If you're going to use content from both, let me talk to Gstaff about merging the two articles, so that we can keep proper History credits in there.

:No, that's just because if you link to a page from that page, the link doesn't work, it just gets bolded instead. So that's why the TALK section of my signature is just bolded and not a link. My signature on any other page will still link here.

:Anyway, I don't know. I think it's pretty solid on the GECK Wiki. If you want to double-check, best bet is to probably leave a note on the GECK Wiki about it.

Menu XML & changing active enchanments
Thanks for the positive feedback.  As far as a full article goes, I assume you meant about the menu xml stuff.  I was thinking about posting an article, but I need to do some rigorous testing to clarify what each element and trait do.  When I have some time, I'll put together a reference article - if you (or anyone else) wants to beat me to the punch though, I wouldn't complain.

As for modifying active spells etc:  I was experimenting with spells that add effects to the enchantment on the player's weapon.  I found that adding effects worked fine.  When the spell ran down and tried to remove effects from the enchantment, and those effects were still active on an actor I'd attacked, the game would CTD.  From your input, the work of the good folks at OBSE, and my own experience, I'd infer that each active effect on an actor has a reference to the magic item (enchantment/spell/etc) that applied it and the index of the effect in said item.  If you remove effects from the item, the indexes stored by the actors become invalid - and possibly out of bounds, which would cause a crash when the game tried to use them.  You didn't have crashes (I'm guessing now) because you changed magnitudes, but the number of effects remained constant.  Of course I could be way off - correct me if so.  In any case, thanks for the additional info.

Reccuring If Statement
You said you could help with scripting problems? :P

I've got a small problem with an If statement running 4 times, when as far as I can see, it should (and I want it to) only run once. The script is:

<pre>SCN TestMidnightActivator

Short CurrentDay

Begin GameMode

    If CurrentDay < GameDaysPassed && TestGlobal > 0
        Set CurrentDay to GameDaysPassed
        Set TestGlobal to ( TestGlobal + 5 )
        MessageBox "Test working"
    Endif

End</pre>

Someone on the Forum thread said I should change the Short CurrentDay to a Float, seeing that GameDaysPassed acts as a Float too; but this had no effect as I can see.
I basicly need the script to add 5 or whatever to the global at the start of a new day. Nothing else I've tried seems to work, including GetCurrentTime and GameHour.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! :)

::Oh, whoops. I'd just put 4 of the objects the script was attached to in the cell. That'll serve me right. No problems here anymore. :P

isKeyPressed Triggering Speed
I found it useful while switching ownerships in PiiiP. Gen-3 functions had the game's default crime activation ( on grabbing ) triggering before the function detected the press. A similar scenario when you need to perform some pre-processing on an object that's just been activate, before it's actual activation. haama made a post about it.<br>

Arena for Mod
Hello, you can delete this if you wish (you said I could leave message here, but I dont know where) so anyway, I have made my own huge world with a lot of quests and everything, but I'm missing one thing... a tournament. You know how there's the arena in the IC, well I copied and pasted that into my world, but am unsure how to make a quest for it. what I need to do is figure out how to make a tournament, you know, with all of the ranks and opponents and such, but dont know how. If the location of this message conflicts with some kind of code on this website, feel free to move it, or *sniff* delete it. I'm just really stressed out. Ive been trying to make a quest for the tournament, and cant do it. I cant make the player go up in rank, or even be able to fight... I enter my arena, but I guess im not scripting anything right. Please help me out. thankyou. (once again, you can move this to a different location, i didnt know where to put this message) --Jonas beattie 19:53, 30 July 2009 (EDT)

User Functions
Hi, there, DW. I have just created an "User Function" article (from the OBSE doc, hope it is OK), an "User Function" category and a sample user function page (just to exercise/suggest a format and to get the general idea of how it would look.

(of course, feel free to undo, redo, delete, whatever you see fit - I am  a strong supporter of the concept that wiki contents have no owner)

And the exercise raised a question: how to manage the potentially many implementations of the same function? All in the same article, one after another? Force different names? (Could mess up the index - Min, Min2, Min3, Min862 . . .)
As I see it, except for the article name restriction, there is no reason not to have in the Wiki  a number of implementations with the same name, as the modder is the one that has to pick one.

I hope I am not giving you more work than help QQuix 00:17, 31 July 2009 (EDT)

:I created a Community Portal discussion for the user defined functions. I think it would be more appropriate to have the discussion there.
