Talk:First Steps

I think you should mention in here that this first tutorial will walk you through adding elements to the existing official campaign. I am very interested in learning how to create a mod that is a completely separate world. While this tutorial might not be intended to answer that question, it might contain a link to an appropriate section of the wiki. --Krag 11:51, 1 April 2006 (EST)

A cleaner way to add a new interior cell, rather than duplicating an old one and deleting all content, is to right click any interior cell and choose Edit (alternately, pick [Cells...] from the [World] tab on the main menu bar). Then on the edit screen, right click any cell name and you will be given an option to create a new cell. I find this method faster and less error prone then the one outlined in the First Steps article. Mitijea 16:58, 5 June 2006 (EDT)

What are the "Undo Checkout" "Checkout All Children" "Refresh Checkout Status" options supposedly seen on right clicking on CreeppyCave in the Cell View ? I do not see them - is it possible to enable them or are not available in Version 1.0.303 (my version) ? Thanks for any help ! :) UDUN 14:29, 3 January 2007 (EST)

If the goal of this first page is a step by step demonstration aimed at absolute beginners, it would be useful to note that the TESC is empty when firstly open, and oblivion.esm is to be loaded by selecting "Data..." in the "File" menu, then checking the first item in the list.

Let me see if I understand this[edit source]

So I want to make a plugin. I make a cave, fill it up all nice ect. ect. and then I save it as a plugin. I'm ok so far? So now, if I were to open this plugin by going to data --> myfirstdungeon (warning this is not active file continue --> ok) and place a big rock right in the middle of the arena, say (not that I have, this is just hypothetical). if i DONT activate this plugin then there will be NO ROCK in the game.

What Im basically asking is, if I totally skrew up while editing a plugin, would just removing said plugin make it go away? Or are there repercussions? Amthysteyes2 13:21, 1 October 2007 (EDT)

If you make a change in the plugin that messes up the game, you can just remove the plugin from the list of data files that the game is using. That removes any mistake in that plugin from the game. Note that if you are editing someone else's plugin, you then need to get a clean copy of that plugin in order to use it again. However, if you are making a complex plugin that is taking you lots of hours to make, I would suggest also making a copy of that plugin every time that you are through modifying it once you verify that it is working the way you want. Nothing is worse than one mistake (this usually only happens when someone is cleaning the plugin) that ruins the plugin file.

Concerning the name[edit source]

Does the fact that under name it still says 'fort strand' (editor id is changed) matter?? because i duplicated it again to make a fort.

No, since that's the name in-game. If you want two fort strand's, that's fine.--Lordnincompoop 11:43, 25 March 2008 (EDT)

Problem[edit source]

I tried to follow the instructions, but I can't duplicate the cell. I tried to do it with the hotkeys and by right-clicking, but nothing happens.

Are you trying to duplicate or rename an exterior cell? Please sign your edits on a talk page with ~~~~ or the signature button next time.

I tried to duplicate an interior cell. sry, that I didnt sign. --Frazi 15:44, 3 March 2008 (EST)
That doesn't make any sense, I don't know what the problem is. Create a thread on the Construction Set Forums, they might be able to help you there. Don't forget to mention that you were following this tutorial.

I found a way to duplicate the cell now, but it still doesn't work like it is explained in the tutorial. thx for the help.--Frazi 15:16, 4 March 2008 (EST)

Help![edit source]

I nearly always have only half a mod completed at the end of the day, so I save, it, then the next day, I open the mod, work on it, and try to save it. THen it says that I can't save a file that already open or something like that, and thus i save it as another plugin, and use both, but my new changes never appear, and I can't make a whole mod in one session! --Lordnincompoop 11:26, 24 March 2008 (EDT)

Oh, and another question: can you add a landscapein an interior cell? cuz I'm thinking of a normal looking house, then you enter through the door and discover a whole new place. --Lordnincompoop 11:29, 24 March 2008 (EDT)

It sounds like you aren't setting your mod as the active file when you load it into the CS. When you load it in the Data box it should be checked and say "Active File" under Status. --Speedo 12:36, 24 March 2008 (EDT)

Thanks! But can you actually make a landscape in an interior room as said?--Lordnincompoop 10:37, 25 March 2008 (EDT)
