Book items are unique in one way. When activated by the player they are not immediately placed in his inventory. Instead a scroll or book page is displayed with a set of controls for reading it. One of those controls is Take. The object is only added to the player's inventory if that option is selected.

  • Teaches: Grants a point of this skill to the reader.
  • Scroll: If checked, the scroll background and controls are displayed instead of the book background and controls.
  • Can't be Taken: The "Take" button is not displayed. Used for posters that can be read but not added to the inventory. This also disables the item's Havok physics, preventing the item from being moved by the Grab button, spell effects, etc.
  • Book Text: Uses a simplified HTML format to display book text. If the Enchanting field contains an object, the text is not displayed.
  • Enchanting: The magic effects associated with this object. If this field is set, activating the book will prepare these spell effects and not display the Book Text field. Scroll box must be checked to use.
  • Enchantment: Not used.
  • Icon: If you're using the unpacked models and textures .bsa to assign book models and icons, the following icons are matched to their prospective books as follows: -

Iconbook1.dds – Folio04.nif
Iconbook2.dds – Folio03.nif
Iconbook3.dds – Folio05.nif
Iconbook4.dds – Folio01.nif
Iconbook5.dds – Folio02.nif
Iconbook6.dds – Octavo04.nif
Iconbook7.dds – Octavo01.nif and MS06LogEmmaMay.nif
Iconbook8.dds – Octavo03.nif
Iconbook9.dds – Octavo02.nif and Quarto01.nif
Iconbook10.dds – Quarto02.nif
Iconbook11.dds – Quarto03.nif
Iconbook12.dds – Quarto04.nif
Iconbook13.dds – MessengerDiary.nif

Iconnote.dds – Note01.nif, CrumpledPaper1.nif and CrumpledPaper2.nif
Iconnote2.dds – Parchment01.nif

Iconscroll1.dds – Scroll01.nif, Scroll02.nif and Scroll08.nif
Iconscroll2.dds – Scroll05.nif, Scroll06.nif and Scroll07.nif
NB: Scroll03.nif & Scroll04.nif don’t have a matching icon, therefore use either Iconscroll1.dds or Iconscroll2.dds

Note: *Can't be taken* appears to not actually disable a books havok physics like it says it does.

Note: books with a very large text file size may cause the game to crash.
