This is an excellent tutorial and answered some of the questions I needed answered. One more question though: is there any reason why you advise using original Beth's normal maps to copy and paste your new normal map (as well as pasting color map onto Alpha channel) rather than work with normal maps created from your new textures?

I wonder that myself. I always make my own new normal maps (in GIMP, definitely NOT Photoshop), and I never use the Bethesda ones. They don't have enough texture to them and I like my armor to show its nicks and bumps.


How do you edit the alpha channel in gimp?

This is actually a horrible way to make normal maps. Normal maps should either be created from a high-poly model, or made by hand. Since if you just simply use Nvidia's tool you'll get a normal map that's way to grainy. Which looks horrible and wastes memory.
