Talk:Installing Blender

We could make this a Template to include in tutorials so authors could just type, I dunno, {{Install Blender}} and it would include this. If things would be better that way. Maybe they wouldn't be, and we could just link.

Also, I like the use of TOCleft, but note that it is not meant for general use, rather just for specific articles where the TOC interferes with other things (usually my tag things when there is no intro).

I wrote this as a tutorial, it has to be changed if we want to use this as a template. I could write another, short install guide that we can be use as a template, but I don't think this should be included in all tutorials. You only have to install Blender once not every time you follow a tutorial for Blender. I think a link to this tutorial is better.
I'll try to keep myself from using the TOC templates just because they look pretty. :)

I'm just going nuts with the Templates, I think they're so cool - but you're right. Unnecessary and unwanted in this case.
As for the TOC stuff, well, I dunno. That's a Wikipedia policy, because they want the Wiki to maintain a consistent look and feel - a goal I generally agree with. But we don't have to be as rigid as them - afterall, this is very much different from Wikipedia.

Update[edit source]

Article needs to be updated to make sure it works with the latest version of blender, PyFFI and the exporter. I'll do when I install the latest version (I'm about 8 versions behind) unless someone else does in the meantime.

Updated. --Qazaaq 18:02, 6 January 2008 (EST)

I guess the suggested versions of Blender, Python, etc. should be updated again to reflect the current state of affairs, in particular since the official windows build now uses Python 2.6. Objections? Amorilia 16:37, 28 September 2009 (EDT)

The current state of affairs is something I'm not familiar with; I'm stuck at 4-6 months ago, and it doesn't look like my Blender clock is synchronizing anytime soon. I'd would appreciate it if you could update the article.

Ok, I updated it (actually a while back... forgot to post it here then, in any case everything still seems up to date as of now). Amorilia 16:47, 14 February 2010 (EST)

PyFFI Update[edit source]

I understand some people have had issues installing PyFFI on Vista. I had some too, but when I ran it in Windows XP Service Pack 2 Compatibility mode there were no glitches. I had a look at the problem, the installer uses some code that Vista doesn't recognize as extraction data. The problem has nothing to do with the installed files, but the installer. Once its installed correctly using Compatibility mode all the files are there and you can use everything properly. I haven't tested all the exports from Blender, but they seem to work normally for Morrowind and Oblivion.

Does this issue still plague some folks? I've not seen any reports of issues with Vista in a long time, so I think the installer can be "officially" declared Vista ready (at least with UAC turned off ;) of course). Shall I update the article to reflect this? Amorilia 16:52, 14 February 2010 (EST)
Amorilia, there is no one else here qualified to update the article, so anything you think is prudent, you are more than welcome to do. We just appreciate that you keep doing it. Thank you again, for that, it's really appreciated.

Problems[edit source]

Hi. I've been having a few annoying problems. I've installed everything, yet when I open Blender the command line says no python installed. I tried again, but to no avail. I tried un-installing and re-installing it, but still no success. Any help guys? I seem to be useless at everything on here ¬.¬
