Problems saving esps[edit source]

I've been using the CS for a couple days now, and there is a repeating factor that if foiling me. Every time I add an esp, it will all work fine and dandy, but then when I load it up to edit it again (loading it via "Data"), I am physically unable to save it as the plugin I am using, the program saying that it cannot be saved on a file that is being used... Is there any method to get around this, short of having to do the entire thing from scratch whenever I need to edit it?GroverA125 17:39, 3 October 2011 (EDT)

First, I'm moving this here because that other article you edited... shouldn't really exist, but I'm not about to deal with it right now. Generally speaking, "troubleshooting" type questions such as this belong on the Forums; there aren't enough people checking the Wiki to answer these questions quickly or knowledgeably, most of the time. There are more people on the forums, and you are more likely to get a better answer, quicker, there. We actually generally delete questions like this from the main namespace to avoid cluttering search results (a long time ago, this was a very serious problem). Questions on the Wiki are generally supposed to be about the article its attached to, or about the Wiki itself.
Anyway, I've put your question here because there aren't really any rules about what goes on your User and User_talk pages (and the User namespace is not usually included in search results anyway), so there's no problem with it being here. As I said, though, most of the time if you ask troubleshooting questions on the Wiki, at best you'll get me pointing you to the Forums, because not many people check here and I don't know the answers to most questions.
This time, however, I do know the answer, so I can help you out. What I'm almost-certain you're neglecting to do is to click the Active Plugin button on the Data loading screen. When you set a .esp file as the Active Plugin, that means it is the file that you are editing.
If you load a .esp without making it active, you load its contents but cannot modify it, hence the error that you're getting when you try to overwrite it.
In general, you should probably only load Oblivion.esm and whatever your active plugin is: having non-active .esp's loaded is an advanced technique with lots of arcane and poorly-documented rules to it (I don't even know most of the details).
Anyway, I hope that helps,
Welcome to the Wiki!
