Help none of my changes in the construction set show up in game

From the Oblivion ConstructionSet Wiki

This is a fairly common question. In an attempt to keep the information centralized so people can find it, the questions have been moved here (the headers are the original titles of the questions). For the most part, this problem is resolved by using the latest Oblivion version (1.2.0416) when using the latest CS (v1.2). There are 3 sections

  1. Answered and problems resolved - Questioner responded back, answer took care of the problem
  2. Answered, but unresolved - Answered, but questioner never responded whether it fixed the problem.
  3. Unanswered - New problems that haven't been addressed.

How do I get my mods to work (answer included patch updates)[edit | edit source]

How do I get my MODS to work?

I have made quite a few MODs but none of them ever work! I might put a house somewhere and when I go to see it, it's not there! Please tell me how to get them to work(In English please. I'm not familiar with the modding language.)

Usually this means you're using CSv1.2, and an older Oblivion patch (1.1, etc.). Update to the latest Oblivion patch, and see if that fixes the problem.
Also, please sign your posts using the button up top or --~~~~

(note to others, I know this question has been answered before, but I couldn't seem to find it, anyone remember the name of the page?)
We need to just have a page on this. Probably in like a Troubleshooting section or something.

NEWBIE HELP MOD WONT WORK Please help (answer included patch updates)[edit | edit source]

Hello all

I want to create MODS for Oblivion and i have read and fully understood the beginners guide to creating MODS, but after i have created a MOD, for example the one with the plates and mug (first mod in beginners guide), i then saved it then went to run it in Oblivion by selecting it in DATA and when i get into the game and load it is just the same as the unmodded game and their is no plates or mug.

i have tried it heaps of times and with different places but i cant figure it out PLEASE HELP

because i want to MOD

Thanks Luke

Can't help you there except check that when you made the mod you were creating it properly and that you put the modded stuff in a place you can actually see them by going there in the game. You should also put this in the questions category using the category : questions thing below that I put there this time. This is so that people who can help you know where to find questions like this. Oh and would you not put MODS and DATA in capitals, they're not initials, mod is a shortened word for modification and data is a full word. --Saber 04:35, 6 August 2007 (EDT)
You're probably using the v1.2 of the CS, and v1.0 or v1.1 of Oblivion. In order for a mod to work, you need to have a newer version of the game. You can download the patch (which is, by the way, very important to avoid a game-killing bug) here. Make sure you get the Oblivion one if you don't have Shivering Isles (you'll have to scroll down).

How do I see my changes (answer included cleaning mod, as well as patch updates)[edit | edit source]

Hello :)

I have a problem with the OblivionCS, I am pretty experienced with the MorrowindCS so I don't think the problem is me. The problem is this: When I create something with the CS and I save the plugin. I launch the Oblivion-Launcher and I check the box for the plugin at the 'Data files' menu. But then when I start the game the changes that I've made in my plugin do not show. The CS and Oblivion are both the latest versions. I've noticed that in the 'My first dungeon' tutorial at the part where they tell you how to test-play by changing the Oblivion.ini, that that doesn't work for me. Please can someone help me out? I'm desperate. Jojoh 16:29, 6 June 2007 (EDT)

Qazaaq 18:36, 28 June 2007 (EDT): Some changes only show up if you start a new game. A saved game before the sewer exit doesn't count, unless you have one without any mods at all.
Megamaff Ive had the same problem, and ive tried it when starting a new game, and dont tell me its the data files stuff cus i know all that stuff, i love installing mods :D When i make changes i go to see them and they arent there. Ticked them, saved them and everything. WTFs wrong???
Dragoon Wraith TALK 21:48, 29 June 2007 (EDT): Megamaff, we would need more information than that to know what is wrong. From what you have described, I don't see anything wrong, but something must be wrong, since you're not seeing the changes that you made.
Try to describe more what you're trying to do, what changes you made, how you made them, and what actually shows up in game. That will give us more information to work with.
Also, please try to be polite about it, and please write in standard American English, not AOL-talk or whatever. I'm not looking for the next great American novel, but your previous post was rather difficult to understand. Proper spelling, grammar, capitalization, and punctuation will go a long way to help us understand what you are saying.
Megamaff
Okay, I'm new to the whole wiki stuff and to modding, but to the problem - I've made a simple house mod just for a test to see what i can do. When i go on the game, after saving the mod and ticking it in Data files, it isnt there. I've tried starting a new game to see if it works then, but theres still nothing. Just whats supposed to be there on the game itself. Its just this one problem, and once its solved then i can start modding. Thanks for your help by the way. And im not american. -__-

Dragoon Wraith TALK 11:56, 1 July 2007 (EDT): (reverting to the left) OK, first of all - do not edit other's signed posts, other than to fix formatting or the like. That is quite rude. Secondly, your own nationality does not matter - this Wiki is for an American company, and so the standard language used on this Wiki is American English. This is done for the sake of consistency and read-ability - sections written in Russian or Italian or whatever would be rather out of place, and would also cause problems because there is always the possibility that no one here can read a given language to make sure the content is good. So use American English, and try to make it legible.

Your newest post is fine, by the way. I was just explaining why I said to use American English.

As for your problems, have you tried re-loading your plug-in in the CS? Is everything still OK? If so, then double-check that you have the correct plug-in checked in Oblivion's Data Files (or use Wrye Bash or OBMM). That is all that is necessary to get the changes in the CS to appear in game, so if there are still problems, then I don't know what to say.

You could check to see if the house has a script on it that causes it to be Disabled, though that's unlikely. Where have you put this house? What "style" is it in?

Megamaff The interior is joint with Anvil castles royal quarters, havent learnt how to make my own cell yet and Its just a normal anvil house in anvil. Twice aswel. I did 2 to see if it was a problem with the house. I also did one just outside Bruma and had the same problem. Ill take a look at Wry Bash and OBMM, just dont know what they do. Thanks for the info
Dragoon Wraith TALK 17:37, 1 July 2007 (EDT): Neither Wrye Bash nor OBMM are going to fix this, since at least insofar as activating mods goes, they do the same thing as Oblivion's default launcher. However, both are recommended both for modding and for playing with mods.
Anyway, another thought has occurred to me - have you tried loading your game with only your mod active? Another mod may be overwriting what you're doing.
Also, since you have edited a vanilla Oblivion cell unnecessarily, your mod is what is considered "dirty". This is fine for a practice or test mod, but not for a released mod. If you wish to release this house, you'll either have to redo it, or else look into cleaning it (I'm not certain of the exact processes involved in cleaning a mod, but there is a lot of information on the subject to be found).
Haama 19:46, 1 July 2007 (EDT): Sorry this is just a suggestion, but you mentioned that you don't natively speak English, so are you by any chance using a non-US Oblivion patch? There's been a lot of problems with people using the new CS and an older version of Oblivion, so maybe there's a problem with the new CS and the latest version of foreign Oblivion patches? I guess you could try some older patches for both, but again this is pure speculation.
Megamaff I may had said I wasnt American, but i didnt say i wasnt english. lol. Im english, not patched oblivion either, when i try the latest it says it found a file with the same name so its ok, so theres no update. Think it means its already patched to be honest. I've cleaned my mod now, i learnt how to make my own cell. Once i figure outhow to show my results(which i may have solved by cleaning it) i can start really modding.Should I patch CS? I ran it with no other mods running and it still doesnt show up. Im running out of ideas now.

Haama 13:41, 2 July 2007 (EDT): Ah, ok, sorry, I couldn't find your comment that sparked DW's comment so I assumed you'd erased it. But I see it now, so my apologies. Back to the topic, when you fire up Oblivion, it'll say what version you're running down in the bottom left corner while the map/opening video is playing. You'll need the latest version of Oblivion (1.2.0416) if you're using the latest version of the CS (1.2). If all that's done, then do something simple with the mod first. Try setting up a quest with the "Start Game Enabled" flag, and put this quest script on it:

scn YourQuestScript
begin GameMode
message "Seems to be working"
StopQuest YourQuest
end
Dragoon Wraith TALK 13:57, 2 July 2007 (EDT): You can use CS v1.2 when you have Oblivion v1.0 or 1.1? I didn't realize you could do that. Anyway, that would explain the problem - mods made with CS v1.2 don't work with Oblivion v1.0 or v1.1, as far as I know, and apparently when you attempt to do so, it simply doesn't load the plug-in.
Now I wish I could write a little blurb about this on the download page... I'll ask Gstaff if we could have something written there.
Megamaff

Good news, It worked!!! I cleaned the mod and it worked. Came up with a few new problems, like the floor texture of anvil being wierd but the mod worked. Thanks for your help. When i've finished ill put a download up for you to see. Thanks! Just a question, but with this mod, the texture of the floor of anvil totally changed, whats wrong and how do i fix it?

I had the probelm with my cahnges not showing up. Oh, to other confused modders: MAKE SURE THE CONSTUCTION SET PATCH LEVEL AND THE OBLIVION PATCH LEVEL ARE THE SAME. IF THEY AREN'T IT WON'T WORK!!!!!

ArtisticPlatypus

'Scuse me.. Got directed to this thread after asking one appearantly very unique question. So.. In most cases this is solved by either matching version of oblivion with version of CS, or cleaning up the mod? And to see what version of oblivion i have, i check the bottom left corner while the map/opening video is playing. Sweet. Now, i just have two more questions; How do i know what version of cs I have, and in case both programs are the latest versions, what exactly does 'cleaning a mod' involve? I'll be eternally thankful and send yearly christmas cards to anyone who answers these questions. If it turns out they were answered somewhere and I somehow missed that part, i will videotape my elaborate 'i'm sorry'-act and upload it on youtube.

Answered, but unresolved[edit | edit source]

Original[edit | edit source]

recently i have tried to add a custom weapon into oblivion i got the weapon in fine and it looks good in the construction set but when i place it in the game and then save the esp and put the x on it in the oblivion launcher it not there when i go to pick it up. at first i thought it was my mesh but i put a regular steel sword in sane thing happened i tried moving stuff it all looked right in the construction set but in-game nothing changed i made sure to save to an active file , also when it saves the esp i go to the data folder but i cannot find it but the oblivion launcher and the construction set both say the esp is there. i have also tried reinstalling oblivion and the construction set. Also im using windows vista premium.

any help is greatly appreciated.

This can happen if you're using the new CS (v1.2) with an older Oblivion (v1.1). Upgrade the Oblivion patch and it should work.
--Haama 12:54, 12 October 2007 (EDT)
I know that this is an old topic but I had the same problem and I found a fix that might work for vista and for sure works for windows 7. So Where I found my mods was in C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\INSTALLDIRECTORY\Oblivion\Data . Of course you would have to Replace USERNAME with your computer user name, and also replace INSTALLDIRECTORY with where oblivion is installed. And if this doesn't work for Vista, Look up how to find your AppData folder and type whatever you named your mod into the search bar. And once you find it just copy it to your Data folder.

How do save my plugin[edit | edit source]

I know this must sound really stupid and basic, but I have started doing the beginner tutorials on this wiki and can do the stuff fine. The problem only comes when I try to save. I press save, and it seems to work fine, and i select it in the data files menu, but when i start the game, the changes I have made are not there.

I am probably missing somthing really obvious but can someone please give me a step-by-step saving and loading process.

PS. I know the asterix means I have changed somthing and they are still there after I save, just in case thats important.

PPS. I save the file as test-2 and make it my active file when I load it

ChickenDom 17:46, 9 April 2007 (EDT)

Do you have the newest versions of both, CS and Oblivion? Because files created with CS 1.2 won't work with older versions of Oblivion (v1.0, v1.1). So check which versions you have. The latest version of Oblivion is v1.2.0416 and the latest version of CS is v1.2.404.

My mod isnt being recognized[edit | edit source]

Hey i was just running through the uber newbie beginners guide for modding. Ive hit a problem i have no idea whats wrong.

Take the first part of lesson two. I mod it so the cellar door is open, and is belongs to no one, i also make it so the cellar belongs to noone and open a few crates. I then save as test and launch oblivion. i click my test.esp (also tried unlicking mods i already have) and go. Now i might not have bothered, nothing has changed. its like i didnt mod anything, the doors are locked and im trespacing.

It did the same with lesson one in Weye Inn, any beer mug or pot i changed resized just didnt change when i loaded up the game. And i definatley had the file clicked in plugins. Any help would be Appreciated. Felstorm. 07:19, 24 October 2007 (EDT)

If you're using the latest CS (v1.2) you need to also use the latest Oblivion patch (v1.2.0416).

If you're using the latest CS (v1.2) you need to also use the latest Oblivion patch (v1.2.0416).

Some Mods Wont Work[edit | edit source]

I'm currently using about ten mods at a time on my game. Problem is, only about half of them are working. I've tried re-arranging the order a little bit, and it doesn't seem to help. Most lkely, that is what I need to do to fix it, but considering I'm new at modding, I don't know how I need to re-order them. If someone could let me know what order mods should be placed in, or if that isn't the problem, then what is, that would be great.

Phoenixnyt 14:32, 22 April 2007 (EDT)

I have this same problem. I have alot of mods on mine aswel and some of them dont work. Even some officials didnt, until i recently cleaned my own mod and they all came available to me. If you've made a mod recently and since then some mods dont work, try cleaning the mod. Worked for me!
Megamaff 5.10pm, 3 july 2007
Questions like this really belong in the Mods section of the ESF. Please post a thread there. I suspect they will want to see your mod list - if you use Wrye Bash, go to the Save tab, select your save, and right-click on the File header above the list of mods in that save. There'll be an option to Copy the list, so that you can Paste it somewhere (like in your thread). If you use OBMM, on the other hand, go to C:\Documents and Settings\<User>\Local Settings\Application Data\Oblivion\Plugins.txt (assuming a default Windows installation), which will contain the list. If you use neither, please download one or both (both are recommended), and use them.

Less Annoying Title[edit | edit source]

Did the title get your attention? Good. Okay, so I've got a problem. I wanted to make my own companion, and I'm kinda new at modding, so I didn't want to write script, dialogue, commands, blah, blah, blah. So, I made a copy of a companion mod I already had, and was just going to mess with the settings to fit my needs. Well, I got it just how I wanted it, and opened Oblivion. I went to where the original NPC had been, (and where my new one was supposed to be), and it was as if I had done nothing! Then, to top it all off, I went back to the CS, and found that not even the esp had saved the changes! (and yes, I did remember to save my work) AAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGHHHH!!!!!!!!!!! PLEEEASE HELP ME!!!!!!!!! (hence the title)

Phoenixnyt 19:33, 29 May 2007 (EDT)

Have you tried to delete the original person and then put the person back in. It almost always works for me.

--david96 04:58, 8 August 2008 (EDT)

Did you set the original companion mod as the Active File when you loaded it up in the CS? Or did you enter a new filename when you saved your changes?
It's generally not possible to change the contents of one .esp from another .esp. Instead you have to save your changes to the original .esp.
Hope this helps. BTW, an obnoxious ALL_CAPS!!!!! title is less likely to grab attention than you might think. For more information, see Internet Etiquette. Scruggs 01:54, 30 May 2007 (EDT)

Why won't my mod load in Oblivion[edit | edit source]

OK, I know I'm a newb now. :-)

I can't get my mods to load in Oblivion. I select them in Data Files when I first start the game, but none of the changes I make show up in the game.

Not sure what I'm doing wrong. Also, when I try to save my mods in CS, it tells me that the ModelLoader still has NIFs. Is this part of the problem?

Thanks for your help.

The Model loader error message is not the problem, that won't cause any problems with your plugin. Take a look at this page, maybe you can find an answer there: Help none of my changes in the construction set show up in game. And please sign with the signature button or by typing ~~~~, thank you.

Problems With CS[edit | edit source]

I am having problems with my TES CS, to the extent that none of the mods I make work. They don't appear in-game when the datafile is selected. Even the simplest of mods, like a barrel to test my CS, don't work. An error message appears on close that says ModelLoader still has 6 NIF Files. Help? --Tiddlydum

As you can read in the answer I gave above, the error is not the problem, see if you can find a solution in the other answers given on this page.
--Qazaaq 18:31, 14 December 2007 (EST)
So what is the reason for the ModelLoader messages?
--Cerrunous 14:06, 7 December 2008 (EST)
A bug probably. It obviously has something to do with the ModelLoader, which loads the models you see in the Render Window. I think it didn't finish loading the models. I don't know what's causing it or why it's important enough to report, but I do know it's not an indicator of the problems described on this page.

Can't save plug-in file[edit | edit source]

Hi, I have been using the CS for a bit. After the first CS lesson I read, I decided to mod the Bruma Fighter's Guild. I saved my plugin file asn activated the game. The mod wasn't there! I tried checking boxes, changing the mod, saving multipule times, etc. It never worked! I'd really like any help you can give me. Thanks!

Mod is not working and patches are not either[edit | edit source]

ok i have a problem my name is clothplay i installed the construction set and made my mode following the guide it didn't work i followed it exactly i read the forum and decided it might be a patch but when i got version 1.2 it said old file not found. however a file of the same name was found. no update done since file contents do not match. so i thought maybe i needed a older patch so i got version 1.1 same thing happened what do i do.

How do I get my mod to show up in game[edit | edit source]

Hi,

I have duplicated the 3 aspects of Stantus Varrids House in the Temple District of IC, that is the basement, house and private quarters. I renamed them to reflect my character name and changed the ownership to playerfaction. I have set a key to enter the front door, and selected the IC shack key for now.

I have made no other changes as yet as I wanted to test it worked first.

Once saved into data, I can see the esp in data files and put a cross there, but it does not change the ownership in game.

I have CS version 1.2.404 and patch 1.2.0416 applied to the game. I believe these are compatible from reading other question and answers.

I have tried turning all other mods off, but with no success still. I have also tried starting a new game just in case, but still no success.

Can anyone point me towards where I am going wrong? Apologies if I have missed something obvious, I think I have read everything I need to for this.Ppb 08:38, 23 December 2007 (EST)

This happened to me but after a while it all showed up and same with my friend --david96 04:52, 8 August 2008 (EDT)

Problems saving esps[edit | edit source]

I've been using the CS for a couple days now, and there is a repeating factor that if foiling me. Every time I add an esp, it will all work fine and dandy, but then when I load it up to edit it again (loading it via "Data"), I am physically unable to save it as the plugin I am using, the program saying that it cannot be saved on a file that is being used... Is there any method to get around this, short of having to do the entire thing from scratch whenever I need to edit it?GroverA125 17:39, 3 October 2011 (EDT)
