Help talk:Wiki Editing Syntax Guide

I corrected the word "editting" to "editing" (however you used it consequently). I hope it was not a mistake on my side... :) Another thing: I don't find the plus sign (+) beside the "Edit", as you mention in the article. --Juharfalvi 04:19, 7 August 2006 (EDT)

Dragoon Wraith TALK 09:39, 7 August 2006 (EDT): Hmmm... Odd. Sometimes it's there, sometimes it isn't. I don't know why that is.
And you are correct about "editing" - oops.

New Wiki Page[edit source]

I just added a new Article based on your Welcome to Wiki Syntax article.

I found this article very easy to follow. The wierdest part was just starting a new page. After this I was affraid of adding my stuff before I was ready but I used the Show Preview button copiously and you should recommend this for new users.

I found the internal links stuff a bit confusing because I didn't directly see how things linked up, i.e. how the anchor worked. However, I stopped trying very quickly since testing new links out caused me to lose my current page and, for a moment I thought I'd lost 2 hours work! I will check this again sometime soon since I'd like to add a few internal links.

Main thing is I dont understand why my new article, Remote Activators did not show up (http://cs.elderscrolls.com/constwiki/index.php/Remote_Activators)

Could you fix this, let me know, then probably remove this talk.

Cheers,

GuidoBot <- see have a proper ID now too!

Dragoon Wraith TALK 22:59, 10 October 2006 (EDT): Nice new ID, but you should sign pages using ~~~~, which will provide a link to your userpage as well as the date and time. It's really helpful on Talk pages. See WtWS - Signing a Page.
As for your page... it's working for me just fine. What was your trouble?
And what about the Internal Links section was being weird? You just put double brackets [[]] around the title of the article you want to link to.
EDIT: Ah, well, for one thing, I see adding the page to a category was confusing. Use the :Category version if you want to link to the category, otherwise drop the colon to add the page to the category. I changed it on your page for you.
Will definitely recommend the Show Preview button to users. Good call.
Also, typically, you can use your browser's Back button to return to an edit page you were working on with your edits intact. You can also open a new browser window, which is probably more convenient. Then you can just highlight an article's title and Copy, then paste it between double brackets to link to it.
GuidoBot 23:59, 10 October 2006 (EDT) Ok, I think I'm starting to 'get it'. Before I used the '+' and got a new page here - sorry bout that. Feel free to clean this all up. Yep its there for me now too. So its all about the colons. With the internal links I was expecting it to have an anchor to the section, or text, I wanted to link (in the same article). I was following your article as I tried this and what happened was I copied your example link, clicked on it in the preview and was told my page had expired. Clicked Back on the browser didn't initially get me there but I hit a link or something to eventually get back to a slightly earlier version. But it panicked me a little so I thought I'd get the main text up then look at this again tomorrow.
Dragoon Wraith TALK 00:30, 11 October 2006 (EDT): Err. Well, this is actually somewhat inconsistent. [[Article Name]] links to that article, while [[Category: Category Name]] adds the page to that category, and you need the colon to link to the category normally. I changed yours into links, so you can see how they work.
Thanks for all your help here. I hope you like the new article - not as deep but maybe more useful as a consequence.
Dragoon Wraith TALK 00:30, 11 October 2006 (EDT): I think it's great, actually.
Couple of other things. It would be nice to put a title up without using =XXX=, it's nice to have something biggish but it doesn't need a number. I notice you use a font 'size' and you may want to add a comment to your article. Also it would be nice to include a basic template for a simple article like mine by way of example that could be copy/pasted as a start.
Dragoon Wraith TALK 00:30, 11 October 2006 (EDT): Good call on the title-ish thing. I'll think about the template, though I'm not sure.

Formatting for Different Browsers[edit source]

Entim 19:52, 12 November 2006 (EST): I have just checked the Adding Collision guide with Firefox, and noticed it is a mess. It looks ok if you use IE to view it. I have made a provisional fix to make it at least readable with Firefox. Pictures are still messed up, and I have no idea how to align them to the appropriate text list entries. What is the solution (if there is any)?

Dragoon Wraith TALK 22:19, 12 November 2006 (EST): I haven't attempted aligning pictures or using thumbnails, so I have no direct experience in this regard. However, I have seen similar effects on Wikipedia, so I imagine that this is a limitation in the Wiki software.
A limitation that makes me personally quite sad. Seems to me that a project like an open source encyclopedia should embrace the set standards rather than Microsoft's "proprietary features" (which is really just a BS way of saying that they aren't even remotely up-to-date on web standards). With the exception of IE, all major browsers have only marginal discrepencies between their rendering and the W3C standards, but IE is still more than 80% of the browsers out there, meaning that web developers either have to settle for pages that don't look right for most people but are designed correctly, purposely designing pages incorrectly so they look right for most people, or else doing both and resorting to "hacks" and abuses of bugs to get all browsers to do things correctly. I don't particularly dislike Microsoft, but I loathe IE.
Hopefully when IE7 will get things more-or-less right (like Firefox and pretty much every other browser out there), and when it becomes more common the Wiki makers will have to change their code to support the real standards instead of just the most common browser.
Hmm IE7 made things even worse. I could workaround the problem by inserting the text and the pictures into tables. Not the best solution, but I didn't find better. I wonder how can it be possible that the Wikipedia image syntax help page is displayed correctly both with IE7 and Firefox, while both of them have different problems with this Wiki.

Moves and Reverts[edit source]

I've been moving the page back to its original location and "afd"ing the new page. Are there any suggestions for dealing with new Edit Histories on the original page? (does it give an error when you try, or what?)--Haama 15:52, 28 April 2008 (EDT)

If you attempt to move my user page (the one Dagoth moved) over to the correct place, it gives you a "page already exists or is invalid" type error. I don't know which applies in this case... is that what you meant? I certainly have not been able to figure out any way to fix it. Asked Gstaff to look into it, though.
Dragoon Wraith TALK 16:36, 28 April 2008 (EDT)
OK, I read up on it. Apparently because I fixed my Userpage first, before moving the old one back, I can no longer move it back. But an admin can - so, waiting on Gstaff here.
Dragoon Wraith TALK 16:39, 28 April 2008 (EDT)
Alright, I made a note on it, bolded it, would make it blink if I could.--Haama 18:05, 28 April 2008 (EDT)

Redirects[edit source]

Just to be certain, Redirects require that the original article (the one that gets the code) is completely empty?--Haama 14:12, 23 August 2008 (EDT)

I seem to recall that this was the case based on a discussion on the Community Portal, but at the same time I know that I have included Redirects in Categories at another Wiki that I work on. I suggest testing it?
Dragoon Wraith TALK 14:54, 23 August 2008 (EDT)
I just ran into the issue while redirecting the Category:Projectile Functions to Category:Projectile Functions (OBSE) - when it included something else (a category link [[Category: Function Types]], to be specific, and why I ask) - it treated the redirect as a numbered list until I emptied out the page.
--Haama 15:29, 23 August 2008 (EDT)
Must be some option in the Wiki software, cuz it works on the other Wiki I work on: see here.
Dragoon Wraith TALK 11:29, 24 August 2008 (EDT)
Maybe it's a new thing, this Wiki runs on MediaWiki 1.10.0, while the other on has 1.12.0 installed.
--Qazaaq 11:41, 24 August 2008 (EDT)
That could very well be it... where do you even check that?
Dragoon Wraith TALK 17:06, 24 August 2008 (EDT)
The Special:Version page, it's under Special:Specialpages in the Toolbox menu on the left. It's not in the menus at Baron's Bazaar, but not disabled just not listed.
